Mako Bamboo Profile Gauge
Mako profile gauges (the name means “true arc”) make it possible to trace the shape of an earthenware vessel at 1:1 scale by pressing the bamboo teeth against the surface of the vessel and then using a pencil to trace the shape taken by the pins. In recent years this indispensible tool has become a favorite of archaeologists around the world.
That each pin is thin (about 0.5mm) and flexible, with the distinctive pliability of natural bamboo, makes it possible to measure earthenware without causing unnecessarily damage. Because the bamboo pins are light and easy on the fingers, the Mako is suitable for extended use without fatigue. Extremely durable, the Mako can also stand up to years of use. Carefully made one at a time by Japanese craftsmen who are attentive to how things feel while in use, the Mako’s wooden frame has a warm texture in the hand. Please consider adding the Mako to your toolbox.

Mako Metal Profile Gauge
This metal version of the Mako is convenient for measuring stone implements, ceramics and other artifacts with hard, finely shaped surfaces. Made of special metal, the thin 0.35mm pins are pliable but resist bending and are designed to be gentle at their point of contact with artifacts. Their tips are grooved on both sides so the Mako can be used to capture the shape of an existing section of an earthenware vessel and then reversed to reconstruct its missing side.
